Hey everyone, I know there have been a lot of ';going on a week trip, should i go to yosemite or yellowstone'; type forums, but i have something slightly different to ask.
I will be working in either yosemite or yellowstone from may to aug, and I cannot decide which location to choose. I am very into hiking, and want the best summer experience. From what i can tell from pics yosemite looks like there is a lot more elevation changes to offer good intense hiking, and yellowstone looks like it has a lot of open area with the mountains in the distance. Any help would be appreciated, as this is one of the hardest decisions i have had to make in a while. Thanks in advance!
YOSEMITE vs YELLOWSTONE--3 month summer experience!?
What a wonderful opportunity for you! I%26#39;d hate to have to make that decision myself. They%26#39;re both so totally different from North Carolina. At high season they will both have tons of visitors, so hopefully you enjoy people, too. Yellowstone is probably more unqiue because of all its geothermal features. There is some back country hiking, but I don%26#39;t really think of Yellowstone specifically as a hiking park.
YOSEMITE vs YELLOWSTONE--3 month summer experience!?
Yosemite is great but I know places simmilar in the world. Yellowstone is totally unique and would be my first choice. For mountain hiking, go to the Tetons and you%26#39;ll have the best places for that. A friend of mine spent 3 weeks just for hiking the Tetons and he was exited about it. Lots of wildlife in the wilderness.
Tet
Its only a hard decision if one of the decisions could be bad. Not sure that%26#39;s the case here.
I%26#39;d pick Yellowstone. Bigger with more going on. The variations in wildlife along should keep you amazed. There%26#39;s more lodging, restaurants, cafeterias and so on. That means more people from around the world for you to meet.
My wife and I would like to spend a summer working at Yellowstone if we ever get the time worked out.
I think the hiking in YNP may be less strenuous but Grand Teton National Park is just down the road. Its beautiful in its own right with more serious up and down hiking.
Our pictures from both GTNP and YNP are on our website if you want to see still more pictures. www.AlandSueJohnson.com. Yellowstone link on the left. Tetons pictures included with them.
I would pick Yellowstone because of the variety of experiences. My daughter has a college friend who had a similar choice and she chose Yellowstone. She still continues to talk about her summer in YNP.
If this is one of the hardest decisions you%26#39;ve had to make in awhile, congratulations you are so lucky and I sincerely mean that. Life can throw so many bad curves at you, that a good curve is always welcome.
I would choose Yellowstone though, because even with all the tourists that come to that park, you will be able to hike to many places and not see them. The park is huge. Plus you will be near Teton Nat Park as well as many mountain ranges in the area.
One note (yes, I am terrified of meeting any bear in the wild, lol) is that there are both grizzly bears and black bears in both Yellowston and Tetons... I think Yosemite only has black bears. Solo hiking in Yellowstone may not be wise. Check with www.nps.gov/yell for more info on that.
