I will be making the drive on July 4 from Rapid City and uncertain whether to stop in Cody or continue into Yellowstone (haven%26#39;t checked Park rooms yet).
Any advice as to distance, traffic, suggested stops, etc. would be appreciated. Also, are there numerous gas stations, drink stops, etc. along the route?
Thanks
distance from rapid city to yellowstoneCheck the Cody, Wyoming forum and see that I asked the same question. It is a day%26#39;s drive. Yes stop in Cody and enjoy the museums and rodeo. It will be worth your time. Then you can make your way into the eastern entrance of YNP.
distance from rapid city to yellowstoneThat time of year there is apt to be a fair amount of traffic, but nothing that will be a problem.
You ask about distance, stops, etc., particularly gas stations, drink stops, etc. It will be pretty much an all day journey. Unlike in many parts of Wyoming, towns are actually pretty close together -- only 40 minutes to an hour apart!! You won%26#39;t find many places in between towns, so be sure to take advantage of restrooms, drink stops, etc. when you see them.
I would suggest you stop and visit Devils Tower National Monument (drive up from Sundance, Wyoming). Sheridan is beautiful and a nice place to grab lunch, but that may be a little late in the day for you, particularly if you do stop at Devils Tower. Gillette is one of my least favorite places in Wyoming. It is in the center of the energy boom -- not enough housing, restaurants, etc. to service the people working and living there. It%26#39;s also not very pretty. You could certainly grab some fast food in Gillette. Just depends when you start out and if you visit Devil%26#39;s Tower.
Thank you very much. We should be leaving Rapid City area by noon, thus arriving in Cody (I think that would be a good stop) by 7 or 8, hopefully.
