Mt. Rushmore to Cody side trip to Little Bighorn????

I am trying to complete my plans for our summer 2008 trip. It is worth the side trip into Montana on our way to Cody to make our way to Custer%26#39;s Little Bighorm? If we do make the side trip what kind of time do I need to allow?

I would say that it is definatley worth it. I would allow about 2 hours at the battlefield then you will need about 3.5 hours to get to Cody. That is not going over the Big Horns but staying on the Interstate in Montana.

What is there? Is there a museum? Anything else? I had wondered about visiting this place too.It sounds interesting for sure. I don%26#39;t think I will have time. Not sure how much additional time it would add to loop and see it on my way to Cody. I will be coming from the Sundance area. Where will you be coming from when you go there CeCe?

From the National Park website there is the battlefield, museum and ranger led programs. We are starting our trip in Denver then going to Mt. Rushmore. From Mt. Rushmore we will drive toward Sheridan and Custer%26#39;s Little Bighorn then to Cody. We plan to spend several days in Cody seeing museums, rodeo, etc. and the eastern part of Yellowstone National Park. Our vacation will end in Jackson Hole where we will fly home.

Sounds like a nice trip. It is similar to mine.In addition to RMNP I will visit the Badlands for a day. I will just spend 2 nights in Cody and I plan to do the Beartooth Loop one of those days. That is why I probably won%26#39;t have time for Little Bighorn. I will move on to Yellowstone before GT. I know you visited parts of YS last year. Enjoy your trip. It will be here before we know it.

If you can fit it in, definitely go to Little Big Horn Battlefield. We were there last summer. The ranger program is there and I recommend taking the tour bus only $8.00 and $5.00 for seniors/kids and the bus is air conditioned and a native American through the local community college does the tour. The visitor center has artifacts from the battle participants and the national cemetary is there as well. Very little has changed in the battlefield area, so you a get a real feel for the battle. We found it to be very interesting. If you have kids they will learn and see things that are much more interesting than in their history books.

I also think ';Custers Last Stand'; (sorry) is worth a visit but keep in mind, instead driving to Cody directly from I90 coming from SD the drive from that exit to the visitor center will take one hour, one hour back to WY and 2 hours at the NM will add 4 hours to your trip. You also can take a self guided auto tour in Little Bighorn Battlefield NM.
