Snow mobile trip into Yellowstone - worth it?

YES, YES, YES

Well at least that was our experience. I cannot remember when I have had a more amazing trip. Even with the minor odds and ends that weren%26#39;t perfect. I will never think about Yellowstone in the same way again. It really helps you understand better the whole story when you see what the animals have to deal with all winter long.

We took the Xanterra three day package the end of January. We drove 150 miles on snowmobiles through the heart of the park and had a fantastic time.

Now there were people who left for the same trip the day we were supposed to go home who may not have felt the same way. They didn%26#39;t even get to the first warming hut before having to turn around to come back due to snow. But they tell us that hasn%26#39;t happened since 2000. All the roads and entrances were closed down that day and we were all snowbound. I think that was really the icing on the cake.

I loved it and would go again in a heartbeat!

If you go through West Yellowstone there are day trips which would be less expensive I%26#39;m sure. It wouldn%26#39;t be quite the same, but I still say you%26#39;ll be glad you did it.

i guess it%26#39;s all about personal preference but here are my thoughts. i was able to take my family into yellowstone prior to the law against unguided tours. we rode from flagg ranch to old faithful, had lunch, %26amp; came back, stopping several times for photo opps. it took us the better part of the day but was a lot of fun because we could go at our own speed %26amp; stop whenever we wanted to.

we went a couple of years later when you had to do the guided tour but we didn%26#39;t really enjoy it. it was hours of driving at 40 mph playing follow the leader %26amp; we didn%26#39;t get to stop very much. just didn%26#39;t like it that well. if i were going into the park again i%26#39;d do the snowcoach thing because you%26#39;ll get to see much more %26amp; it%26#39;ll be warm.

i highly recommend going snowmobilig but i like doing my own thing %26amp; there are only a few unguided trips available. here is a link to the one we love. you can rent doubles or singles for the day or half day. you get a map of togwotee national forest which is very easy to follow, not to mention there being others on the trails (so you%26#39;re not alone out there). you can drive up to the togwotee lodge %26amp; have lunch in a half day rental %26amp; still have time to have plenty of free play in the open fields. if you rent for a full day you can trip all the way over to brooks lake lodge which is a beautiful ride on snowmobiles %26amp; have lunch there. again, it%26#39;s all about personal preference. we have done this trip 3 times %26amp; will do it again.

We just returned this week, and we had a wonderful time. You really get to see some beautiful scenery.

The snowmobiles are a blast. The only thing is the trip is long, from about 6am until 6pm. This is a much different way to see Yellowstone. Some trail walking is involved, to be able to make it down to some of the waterfalls, various sites etc. The total

trip on snowmobile is approx. 90miles. We loved it, but it all depends on what your looking for in your

adventure......Goodluck, and enjoy your trip.

re ptguard10%26#39;s preferences:

If you just want to go snowmobiling there are obviously lots of other places you can go to enjoy that sport.

However if you want to see Yellowstone in the winter then you really can%26#39;t go anywhere else. And there are only two ways to do that - with a snowcoach/van or with a snowmobile. There are pros and cons to both.

If you don%26#39;t want either there is still hope. Go through Gardiner and travel the northern road through to the NE entrance. This is where we saw the most variety of animals.

And imho yellowstone in the winter is fantastic.

PS deepseajunkie, was your trip a one day? Where did you start from?
