Don%26#39;t rely on the online reservations. Friends of ours, just yesterday, booked 4 days inside the park at Lake Yellowstone Hotel when Xanterra website showed no vacancy there, by calling them directly.

Looks like you have an awesome trip planned!

Canyon is my favorite because of the location. EAsy to get into Hayden Valley in the early AM. Not hard to get over Dunraven Pass and into Lamar Valley. The geysers are a bit of a drive.

Old Faithful Inn is old and very cool. The other two lodges there are newer. They%26#39;re clustered around Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin. Nice area but quite a drive to Hayden Valley and Lamar VAlley. You may see bison, elk and other wildlife there.

Mammoth. I%26#39;m not crazy about being that far to the Northwest but I%26#39;d stay there if it was my only choice. Never stayed there.

Roosevelt Lodge. Pretty rustic but I like it. Very nice setting and I like the front porch at the lodge. We thought the food was decent too. Its across the street from the road to Lamar VAlley.

Grant Junction. This is way too far south for my tastes. Don%26#39;t know anything about the accomodations though. It is right on Lake Yellowstone.

Lake Junction. The Lake Yellowstone Hotel is the classiest place I think. I don%26#39;t want to stay in a hotel but we are staying 1 night in a cabin there next June. Its a pretty area and at the bottom of Hayden Valley.

All that said, I like (1) Canyon and (2) Roosevelt. We stayed at both last June and will again next June.

Not all will agree with my choices. We tend to stay based on location, not luxury.

at any of the big US nat parks you definitely want to stay IN the park

- main reason is that the parks are big and it saves commuting time PLUS you want to be up early to catch sunrise (and thats the best time to see the animals too) and at sunset you want to be sitting with a drink enjoying it - not thinking of driving bacj to your hotel

- another reason is price - we think the parks are very reasonable - motels nearby charge premium prices because they are so close to the park so its very little extra to be in the park

- its fun!! we love the cabins you can stay in - much better than another motel room

so the golden rule is to book early and stay IN the park - the worst option in the park is bett e rthan the best option outside the park

Also, prices in many parks are higher than in smaller towns around it and not everybody wants to start very early in the morning. Many locations are very close to the parks and there are people who like a pool and a TV. There are NP%26#39;s we like to stay inside and parks we like to stay outside. It%26#39;s all a matter of personal preference. We have been to places in NP%26#39;s and said: Never again and had some fantastic lodges outside.

So Beeble, we do not agree on this.

The Canyon area is my first choice. The reason is location.

The Old Faithful Inn would be my other choice. The reason is the WOW factor. The lobby is something that has to be experinced. Then it is just a short walk to the geysers.

Just remember, the park is the trip. The lodges are just a place to sleep.

At Old Faithful, we prefer Snow Lodge as it is modern with a mountain lodge atmosphere. Old Faithful Inn is just a short walk across a parking lot. Go there and enjoy the magnificent lobby, the picturesque dining room and the patio overlooking the geyser. Then return to an up-to-date hotel and a room more worth the money.

At Mammoth, cabins with West-facing porches have a good view of the hot springs area and, weather permitting, the sunset.

Lake Hotel gets mixed reviews, however we thoroughly enjoyed it. The dining room was good and the sitting room with piano player was enjoyable. Spend the extra money for a lakeside room.

maybe we have just been lucky but all the accom we have has IN the parks has been wonderful - and very competitivrely priced compared to the motels near the park

anyone who goes to yosemite or yellowstone and has a tv as one of his priorities deserves to have a mountain fall on him (actually perhaps it already did)
