Need rec's for Summer Trip to Jackson

Hi,

Like the post below, we are also visiting Jackson in mid-July. We (me, wife, and 7 yr old daughter) will be staying 5 nights in Jackson at a place thats walking distance to the town center.

We plan on rafting one day, and driving up to Yellowstone another (long) day to see the geysers. (Maybe next year we%26#39;ll focus on Yellowstone, but this year the focus is Jackson and GTNP.)

We like to hike, so I need some rec%26#39;s on moderate intensity hikes in the Tetons outside of Jackson. One with good views and that leads to or goes around a lake, or follows a nice river/stream would be nice.

Also, rec%26#39;s for which rafting company to use would be helpful. We%26#39;ll probably do an afternoon trip so one with a nice dinner spread as part of the deal might be good.

Rec%26#39;s on %26#39;must try%26#39; restaurants would also be great.

Finally, any other suggestions for activities/side trips one may not think of would be great. (We%26#39;ll be doing the alpine slide for sure...)

Thanks!

Barker-Ewing does great raft trips down the Snake River-perfect for kids and adults. The Gunbarrel restaurant is great and affordable- elk, seafood, and steak. We spent 2 days in Grand Tetons last year and 2 days in western Yellowstone. We will be spending 2 days in Grand Tetons and 3 days in Cody-western Yellowstone this year.

I meant to say 3 days in Cody/eastern Yellowstone this year.

a great hike for your entire family is phelps lake. it%26#39;s not that far or hard %26amp; it takes you to an overlook that%26#39;s beautiful. i%26#39;d go on %26amp; head down to the lake where your daughter can get in the water %26amp; cool off. we really enjoyed it last year. it%26#39;s on the dirt road that goes from teton village to moose junction.

go to dornans one night. sit on the deck %26amp; watch the sunset. the food is not bad either. some decent shops right there %26amp; your daughter might enjoy the chuckwagon dinner that they serve at dornans.

take her to teton village during the day. ride the tram to the top %26amp; let her play in the snow. they have a climbing wall set up in the village %26amp; lots of other fun things to do.

You will love Grand Teton National Park. It is fabulous! We were there the week before Labor Day (late August).

For a hike in GTNP, I%26#39;d suggest Jenny Lake up to Inspiration Point. You can take a boat across for a small fee, or you can hike around, which is about 2.5 miles. The walk from there up to Inspiration Point is another half mile. There is abeautifulk waterfall that is sort of on the way, I think it%26#39;s called Hidden Falls. Anyway, the signs are very clear so it%26#39;s easy to find. After that point, it gets kind of steep, so you%26#39;ll want to give your little girl some help, but I was being passed up by fearless kids her age when I was hiking it! Inspiration Point gives a magnificent view of Jenny Lake. Then if you%26#39;re tired, you can take the boat back. Always a good option.

We really enjoyed the restaurant Nani%26#39;s (Italian). Sweetwater%26#39;s was very nice for lunch. Went to a TERRIBLE pizza place. I think it was called ';mountain high pizza pie '; or something. Awful!

I just remembered 3 other places, a couple which I think were already mentioned here... Dornan%26#39;s views are outstanding! The food is fine, and you can%26#39;t beat the view! And it%26#39;s very conveniently located in GTNP park, if I recall, or right outside the gates. And you can fill up your tank while you%26#39;re there.

We stopped for lunch at Million Dollar Cowboy. They had a limited menu (I think it was around 2 or 3 pm and nothing else was open.) We had burgers, which were great, and we enjoyed looking at all the memorabilia.

For a little more expensive meal with amazing views, we loved the Granary at Spring Creek Ranch. Very casual attire is fine. Great food, and the views are spectacular!!!

Dornans also has a great chuckwagon breakfast! Great way to start your day, wonderful views of the Tetons (think family photo op)

There are many lovely hikes, I recommend getting the GTNP trail guide at the visitor center. Also, GTNP has a JR Ranger program (as does Yellowstone), That would be great for your dtr to get to know the park (good for mom %26amp; dad, too) Trails from String Lake to Jenny and Leigh Lakes are lovely. Picnic area there, too. The Lawrence Rockefeller Center opened up just before the park closed for the season (alon Moose Wilson Road) I understand trails through the old JY (Rockefeller) Ranch to Phelps Lake are from there.

The Taggart and Bradley lake trails (share same parking lot access from Moose Entry) are moderate hikes to beautiful lakes. Close to that is the Cottonwood Creek ';picnic area';. If you avoid the tables and stroll down to the creek, you%26#39;ll have a lovely place for lunch picnic.

Jackson Lake Lodge has a great soda fountain for lunch or ';?';, would be great fun for your daughter to sit at the counter on a stool.

We like Mad River Boat Company for white water rafting. I think they do (or did) both lunch and dinner trips. The Bunnery is a great breakfast spot. Gun Barrel good, also Calico on the Village Road, even has a lawn for kids to play; get table on deck so you can see the action.

Wow, great info, thanks!

make sure you go to the rodeo while you are in the area. if you go to cody they have one every night. in jackson they have them on wed %26amp; sat. lots of fun, especially if you haven%26#39;t seen one before.

mangy moose at teton village, the sweetwater restaurant, burke%26#39;s chop house, thai me up, gunbarrel, bubbas %26amp; jedediah%26#39;s for breakfast, the old yellowstone garage %26amp; nani%26#39;s for italian.

Alas, OYG (Old Yellowstone Garage) has closed. Owners headed for Europe to retire. It will be much missed. It was our ';go to'; for special occasions.

Nani%26#39;s is a good choice for Italian; there is the ';main menu';, in addition to monthly regional specialties. nanis.com is the website. The website will let you know what region they are featuring in the month of your visit, as well as give you history of the restaurant. Tiramisu is HUGE!! It is something to be shared with at least one other person. Also, homemade limoncello!
