We plan to drive from Detroit area to Wyoming to see Yellowstone, Tetons, Devils%26#39;s Tower, squeeze in Mt Rushmore (In know it is not in Wyoming). Any suggestions for an itinerary plus stops along the way? My husband can probably do about 8 hrs a day comfortably, unless there are neat things to see along the way. We have a total of 17 days which we could perhaps stretch a bit. Also, we are traveling with a full size standard poodle in training to be a Service dog, so he can go anywhere.
thanks for the advice. We are going in July.
Driving from Detroit - one driver in family, suggestionsAs a dog lover, as well as a lover of Yellowstone, I am concerned about you bringing a dog to the park. I understand Service dogs are special, but any dog is a concern there due to bears (dogs and bears are natural enemies) and the thermal features. Plus having a dog with you likely will limit your ability to view some wildlife closely. This is from the National Park Service Yellowstone Site:
Regulations Regarding Pets
1. Pets are prohibited in the backcountry and on trails and boardwalks for the following reasons:
Yellowstone is bear country, and domestic animals (especially dogs) and bears are traditionally antagonists.
There is a possibility of exchange of diseases between domestic animals and wildlife.
Thermal areas pose particular hazards to pets. Boiling water in pools and thermal channels can cause severe or fatal burns if your pet decides to take a drink or go for a swim.
