Hi, My 18yo daughter and myself are going to Jackson, Wy for Xmas 2008. Spending 5 nights there coming from Canberra Australia.

We know we want to do a snowmobile day, and a wildlife day, and a bit of skiing.

Any Advise on---

Snowmobile trips??

Wildlife trips - the one day kind in a snow coach? Which company is best (and affordable)?

What is skiing at Snowking is like (remember the snow will be awesome and the runs steep compared to Aust).

Is there anywhere you can ride a horse in the snow?

What else is a %26#39;must do'; while there? Does anything happen on Xmas day?

You will have a blast. We just spent 7 days over X-mas in Jackson at the Alpine House. You can read my review at the Bed and Breakfast section on Jackson Hole accomodations.

Snow King is not the place for a ski vacation. It%26#39;s a half day or one day kind of a ski place. Go to Jackson Hole. It%26#39;s a great place to ski for any level. You can catch a bus from Jackson or rent a car.

If you stay in the city of Jackson itself, most places are walking distance. Great shops, and places to eat. Bundle up it%26#39;s cold. X-mas day, my daughter and I walked around the town square. Nothing was open, but it was fun window shopping..Reservations for restaraunts on X-mas day is highly reccomended. We went to the movies that night.

Our friends took a snowmobile tour of Yellowstone and loved it. It%26#39;s a long day 5am to 5pm, but everyone I talked to says its a must see.

Take the Sleigh ride at the National Elk Refuge. You%26#39;ll see most of the wildlife just on that trip alone.

My first day on the runs at Jackson Hole, a moose walked in front of me and then on up the slopes. A rare sight, but a memorable one.

Yes, Jackson Hole is the ski resort you will want to go to. you can access it at jacksonhole.com. It is in Teton Village, which is probably technically part of Jackson, but if you are researching lodging on TA, for example, you will want to look at both Jackson and Teton Village. If you choose to stay slopeside, there is a shuttle bus that runs into Jackson frequently.

While Jackson Hole is reputed to be one of the toughest mountains around, there are plenty of greens and blues (although those will be harder than comparable runs at most other places, too).

I have skiied JH several times, but never Snow King, but this coming trip, I am going to do a few runs and check it out. It%26#39;s sort of the locals%26#39; intown mountain and is supposed to have some pretty steep runs!

We%26#39;ll be heading there the last week of Feb for a week. I hope the weather will be good and it will have lots of fresh powder.

Keep us filled in on your trip. We need all the advice we can get since this will be our 1st time to Jackson Hole to ski.

Hi Again, Thanks for the help. Does anyone know what the dates are for the %26#39;High Season'; and for the ';really high season';? Is it better to go a few days before Christmas or over Christmas or a few days after?

Just got back from 5 nights in Jackson. We enjoyed it although we are not skiers. You can easily see Snow King from town. I noticed there were hardly any skiers on the Snow King mountain. One day I think I saw maybe 5 skiers. Most of the time the chairliftsw were not even running, I think for lack of skiers. Even on Saturday I saw maybe 15 skiers, tops. I talked to several locals and they said that although it is steep and challenging the snow conditions are not always good. They like it after a fresh snow. I think most people recommend going to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. It was very cold while we were there and it snowed a lot. Took the snowmobile trip into Yellowstone. It is an all day trip. Leave Jackson at 6 a.m. and return around 4 p.m. or 5 depending on the riders in your group. This is an expensive excursion. They do give you a snowmobile suit so we did not feel cold. The temp was -7 degrees F. in the morning. The day before at Old Faithful it was -35! Three of us went and this was our first time snowmobiling. The snowmobile tour was serene and peaceful. You stay on the road and can do the speed limit which is 45 m.p.h. max. You must stop at stop signs, etc. We did not see as much wildlife in Yellowstone as we thought. We were able to see a small group of 7 bison right on the road. We had to pass them on our snowmobiles. We did see a coyote at Old Faithful. Spent some time at one of the geyser basins to look at some of the thermal activity, but most of our time was on the snowmobiles. Our best wildlife viewing of our trip came from us getting up in the mornings and driving our car from Jackson at sunrise. This is when we saw deer, elk, rocky mountain sheep, coyotes, and moose. We drove the road that runs in the back of the Elk Reguge and another road that goes to Kelly to see this wildlife. I think this road was called Gros Ventres. I hope this helps you some and if you have any questions I would be happy to answer them.

you%26#39;re going to love it. i%26#39;d stay somewhere around the town square. even during the Christmas holidays the prices are much cheaper than the summer rates. we love the inn on the creek, the sundance inn, wagon wheel village, %26amp; the wort is the nicest place in town.

if you%26#39;re going to be there for 5 days i%26#39;d probably go snowmobiling a couple of times. maybe one guided %26amp; one unguided trip. the guided trip to granite hot springs is fun. once you get up there you soak in the hot springs while it snows %26amp; your guide grills you a steak lunch.

we enjoyed the unguided trip the best. it%26#39;s about 40 minutes from downtown jackson. they give you a map of the togwotee national forest %26amp; it%26#39;s very easy to follow. you can ride them up to the lodge %26amp; have lunch, plus do a lot of freelance riding in the open meadows on the way. if you keep them for the entire day you can go all the way over to brooks lake lodge which is a great place to eat lunch. here is the link:

great places to eat are the sweetwater, the gunbarrel, milliondollar cowboy steakhouse, mangy moose in teton village, burke%26#39;s chop house, old yellowstone garage, nani%26#39;s, bubba%26#39;s, %26amp; jedediah%26#39;s...really there are no bad places to eat.

i%26#39;m not aware of any place you can ride a horse in the winter. you can take a snowcoach into yellowstone all the way up to old faithful. the lodge is very nice %26amp; it%26#39;s fun watching it erupt in the snow.

winter (even Christmas) is the off season for jackson so it%26#39;ll be very laidback during that time. make sure to go by the milliondollar cowboy bar which is right on the square. here is a link to the webcam that i look at everyday. it%26#39;s mounted above the bar looking east toward the square.

This is so good. We are getting planned.

What do people think of as a great place to stay. Price is of great importance. We don;t want to stay at a rat hole , but something with %26#39;ambiance%26#39; an hopefully an outdoors hot tub so that we can sit in the snow and soak. But of course on a lower to moderate price.

i really don%26#39;t know of any ';rat-holes'; in jackson. again, the sundance inn is a very neat ';60%26#39;s style motel'; located one block from the square. rooms are large but they are very clean %26amp; the owners are great. they have a hot tub outside. you can book a room there for around $80. inn on the creek is about 4 blocks from the square %26amp; is very quaint %26amp; a little more expensive. more of a bed-n-breakfast type of feel. any of the townsquare inns are good.
