Beware- Coming to Yellowstone thru Denver at end of August

The Democratic National Convention will be held in Denver the last of August. Traffic and congestion will be a problem. So beware those who are travelling thru Denver to YNP.

You know, CeCe, I was thinking about that and wondering when that was. I am sure glad we will be in the area in the first part of August. Thanks for the reminder, I bet a lot of people will appreciate knowing that!

NOTE: If you are flying into Denver, renting a car and not planning to stay in Denver, it shouldn%26#39;t be a problem. Airport %26amp; rental agencies may be a little busier than normal -- but the airport isn%26#39;t in Denver. It%26#39;s north east of the city. So rent your car, take E470 (this is a toll road, but terrific way to avoid dragging through town and the traffic) to I25. You%26#39;ll be heading away from the city %26amp; it will be easy.

That is true Shell Net but a friend who lives in Denver told me about this. So many people opt to stay in Denver a few days either before or on their way back from YNP that I thought vacation travellers ought to be aware of this.

The convention is Aug 25-28 at the Pepsi Center near downtown Denver. It is expected to add up to 35,000 more travelers to the region.

DIA will be very busy, so allow plenty of time to get through security. Lodging near the airport may be difficult to get during this time. Also plan ahead on rental cars, book as early as you can.

A second note on rental cars that I learned long ago. When most companies take reservations, they ';overbook,'; planning there will be cancellations. I was a high school speech and debate coach for many years %26amp; when we took students to the national tournament, we generally needed vans to transport the team in. So did everyone else attending from all over the nation. A reservation for a van didn%26#39;t guarantee anything -- companies assumed cancellations and there weren%26#39;t any.

I%26#39;m not sure how to get around this problem if you are arriving when the hoards are - check with the company to see if they offer some type of ';guaranteed reservation'; or if you can pay in advance versus a reservation.

Remember, if the rental cars run out of vehicles, there aren%26#39;t many places close enough to drive more in -- and certainly not with a lot of vehicles.
