CHoice

Hi there all!

We will be in the US from the 6th of Sept till the 1st of Oct. We did have on our itinerary to do Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and also Yellowstone. We decided not to do all three as we do not want a rushed holiday. Can someone let us know which of these three would be more worth the trip. I know they all are, but we can come back again one day and visit the others. your counrty is BEAUTIFUL...

Kangarooo.

P.S. Where is the best shopping in California for quality and price.

CHoice

With three weeks you could probably do all three places especially if you fly into Las Vegas, drive to the Grand Canyon then drive to West Yellowstone,Montana and begin your tour of Yellowstone. Some friends did that last year but they began in Yellowstone, drove to Las Vegas and then to Grand Canyon. There are plenty of airports you can fly into like Salt Lake City, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix.

OK thansk.

We have changed our mind and have decided to miss LV and GC in favour of more time in Wyoming.

What is the minimum time but comfortable ideally suited for WY?

Kanagrooo!

I%26#39;d check the Things to Do tab on your left (side of this page). Given your time available, and depending on your interests, I%26#39;d spend at least five nights in YNP, two nights for the GRNP, an overnight in Cody to see the rodeo, if you like, but definitely the excellent museums. I%26#39;d drive RT to Cody via Beartooth Pass and return the east entrance, If you like wildlife, bring binoculars and scope, or ask someone with a scope if you can see what they are observing. World of difference, will help make your trip. You might also consider a drive to Glacier National Park, absolutely beautiful. I%26#39;ll let you Google all of the above, and hit us with more questions.

Sorry, GRNP? Meant to say GTNP - Grand Tetons National Park. And while there, the town of Jackson Hole.

I see from your previous posts you also are considering Boston. Boston is a fabulous city/area. When will you make up your mind? And why on earth did you ask about the ';...best shopping in California...'; It%26#39;s a huge state!

Thanks guys.

Honestly, my wife posted that question about shopping in CA - without me knowing... I just read it and I thought ';YEP I%26#39;m a gonna now...!';

Just ignore that question.

Kanagooo!

Couple of comments and a question:

Question first - are you planning on driving from California to Yellowstone %26amp; back? Because of the distances, that would be important for us to know in giving you advice on an itinerary.

Cody Night Rodeo only runs through August, so that will not be an option. But Cody would be a worthwhile stop on your trip just for the Buffalo Bill Museum.

September is apt to be cool to cold weather. It is very common for it to snow in Yellowstone as early as the first week-end in September. This is from the National Park Service%26#39;s Yellowstone Web Site:

Fall: Fall weather is unpredictable; roads may be closed temporarily by snow or other weather conditions. Snow tires or chains may be required. Please Note: The section of the Beartooth Highway (Highway 212), between the junction of Highway 296 and Red Lodge, Montana, closes in winter on a schedule determined by amount of snowfall. Travel between Red Lodge and the Northeast Entrance is not possible on Highway 212 until it opens again in the spring.

WOW - great advice there..we may have to re-consider that leg of itinery now.

Kangaroo!

Kangaroo -- I did want you to be aware that you looking at being in the park during an unpredictable time of year.

My husband and I will actually be in Yellowstone when you are planning to be there (think our reservations at Old Faithful Inn are from Sept. 14-18). There may be some light snow, fog, frost on cars in the morning, and cool weather, or it can be a beautiful warm fall. The roads are unlikely to close during that time %26amp; it would be unlikely you would need chains. Could we get an early snowstorm that would dump 6 inches of snow - yes! Is it likely - no!

It is my favorite time to be in the park -- the hoards of tourists are gone. I love a slight dusting of snow on the bison with their breath a little frosty. But it is just as likely to be 60-65 degrees F. and 35-40 degrees at night, with no precipitation of any king (rain or snow).

You are not leaving enough time for Yellowstone (but I understand you are trying to make the most of your trip). I%26#39;m assuming you are looking into flying into Jackson Hole? Will you then rent a car?

Have you considered skipping Boston, which is a bit less than a 4 hour drive from NYC and go instead to Washington, DC? DC is about a 4 hour drive from NYC as well, only heading south.

Sticking to the above posted itinerary, I think I might pass up Maine altogether. I don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;ll get enough out of going for one day, and it%26#39;s a few hours from Boston.

There is so much in the Washington, DC area, including horse country. It might be worth looking into.

I hope I%26#39;m not being a busy body, it%26#39;s just my thoughts. BTW, I live in NY and have been to NYC, Boston, Maine and Washington, DC.
