I am spending 4 nights in/around Yellowstone; first night at Old Faithful Inn; nights 2 and 3 in Gardiner; night 4 in Silver Gate. I will be coming from the south and leaving from Silver Gate, heading north. Based on the above bases, what is the recommended strategy for covering the park?
Thanks for any suggestions
Strategy for seeing the park?I too have been trying to figure out my park ';strategy'; for our Summer 2008 trip.
Here%26#39;s some ideas, hope this helps some.:
Day 1 - visit Lewis Lake, West Thumb Geyser Basin, Lake YS and then on to Old Faithful. See some of the geyser basins nearby, maybe a short hike.
Day 2 Get up early, drive over to Hayden Valley. Then up to Canyon area, see the canyon and the falls. Drive west to Norris, then up to Gardiner for the night.
Day 3 See Mammoth area, maybe visit Tower Falls, Lamar Valley. Maybe horseback ride or raft trip in Gardiner area.
Day 4 - Get up early, head to Lamar Valley. Maybe back down to Canyon, then to your Silver Gate lodging.
Strategy for seeing the park?I don%26#39;t remember where I found the website below. It may have even been from someone%26#39;s post here. this weblink/trip journal has what seems to be a very logical progression of touring events for Yellowstone. We found it very helpful and deciding how to begin planning a YNP loop tour.
I hope you find it helpful as well!

I just realizedd that you were starting in the south. The starting point of this family%26#39;s tour was Mammoth. You could adapt it to your projected route, of course.
Pozj, Thank you for that link. What a great website. It made some of my plans come alive.
I am also trying to figure out a basic strategy for seeing the park. Here is our idea list for mid August. My husband and I will be traveling with our 13 yr old son, so plans will change depending on interests and energy levels. We will do more hiking if the weather is cooler, more water activites if it is hot.
We will enter the park from the east, after 2 nights in Cody, so we should have an early start.
Day 1: See eastern/central and southern areas:
Hayden Valley, maybe Canyon, back down to Lake, past West thumb and into Old Faithful Area. Checkin, stroll the boardwalks.
Night at Old Faithful.
Fairy Falls Hike
Drive through Madison, Norris,
stop at Swan Lake Flats for beavers.
Gardiner-3 nights
Mammoth, Boiling River
Up early one morning for Lamar Valley
';Paddle and Saddle%26#39; %26amp;/or Roosevelt Cookout
To Canyon if not seen before, maybe Mt Washborn
Outside the park extras:
Chico Hot Springs, Virginia/Nevada City
Drive to Little Bighorn for Pow Wow
Hot in Yellowstone would be sunny, low to mid-80s with very little humidity.
