Anyone done the Triangle X evening supper float?

1) Has anyone experienced the supper float tours put on by Triangle X?

2) Other related questions on choosing a float trip: We have reservations at Colter Bay cabins for one night in late July. Will be coming from Yellowstone, and plan to arrive Colter Bay in mid afternoon. Trying to get a tentative plan in mind for late afternoon/evening and following morning that puts us in Jackson sometime around mid-day. We are leaving from there (driving) and hope to get to Rawlins at least (maybe Laramie or Cheyenne) before stopping for the evening. Family with 3 children, ages 13, 11 and 7. I would like to do a scenic float tour, preferably within the park. Do they all start at the Moose area (so far that%26#39;s what I%26#39;m finding)? Given that we are staying at Colter Bay, just want minimize the distance we travel to get to the float tour, especially if we choose morning instead of evening. I looked at options for Barker-Ewing, Triangle X and Solitude. Some have a sunrise option (best wildlife viewing, but getting the family going really early from Colter Bay!) Some offer an evening option (with Triangle X having the supper option also), or Barker-Ewing lists an 8:00am choice (might be a more reasonable time to get the family going in the am). Basically I%26#39;m trying to decide whether to do the float in the evening or save it until the morning we depart and leave the evening open to whatever we feel like doing when we arrive GTNP? Thoughts?

We are a couple in our early 5os and would appreciate any suggestions for a one week itinerary for Yellowstone and Grand Tetons; airport to fly to, places to stay, places to see etc..

We will be flying from New York/New Jersey airports and will be renting a car upon arrival.

Now to see if I can answer some questions or at least offer some thoughts.

One week is enough if that%26#39;s all you have. In June we%26#39;ll spend 7 days in Yellowstone and 2 in the Tetons. We just get into looking for wildlife and spend most of the time doing that. You%26#39;ll need to include some of the other features too, such as geysers and Old Faithful.

We like to fly into Jackson Hole. Its close and is basically in Grand Teton NP. You could fly into Salt Lake City and spend 5-6 hours driving but would save some money.

Some car rentals are at the airport and some are in Jackson. How much difference that makes depends on how early your flight is. We try to always get early flights and don%26#39;t want to drop off in Jackson.

www.travelyellowstone.com is where you check for reservations in the park. At this point, there may not be any. If you can schedule around availability of lodging, you might make it work.

We%26#39;ve stayed at Old Faithful Inn, Canyon and Roosevelt.

OFI is a cool old place. Western side of the park. You are right at the Upper Geyser Basin and Old Faithful. Its a long way from the main wildlife areas though. Stayed there in 2006.

Canyon is centrally located on the east side of the park. Its my favorite because of location. Near Hayden Valley and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Roosevelt is actually a cooler place in some ways. The main problem is that the cabins don%26#39;t have running water or restrooms. Much like tent camping with hardwalls.

If there%26#39;s nothing in the park, you can look in West Yellowstone, Cooke City and Gardiner.

Jackson or Cody to Deadwood S.D. and back to Yellowstone ?

Have been posting questions regarding Yellowstone/GTNP in Sept...But now have a lengthy (sorry) quesion about driving over to Deadwood,S.D. area for Mt.Rushmore and Devil%26#39;s Tower. If we did this from Jackson with a one night stop, would two nights in Deadwood be long enough or do we need three? On the return back would we miss something by not stopping again somewhere before Cody? Our very original plan was to fly into Rapid City and do the Deadwood etc. area for three nights then stop one night enroute to Cody (2nts) and continue on to Yellowstone, GTNP etc. We are changing plans to fly into/out of Jackson due to the one way car rental pricing at over $1000.00. Would like to work in the Deadwood area from Jackson/Cody but not if it will take too many nights to do so comfortably. We have 15 (could probably do 16) nights total.

I%26#39;m not the professional here, but I did teh GTNP and YSNP 2 years ago at about the same time frame as you are going. AWESOME! that%26#39;s all I can say for that area. We were there for 10 days. We stayed in the Teton Village (mangy moose is there, at the bottom of the Rendorez(sp?) mt. another place not to miss. in a couple of months, we will fly into Denver, and do the Black HIlls area. Deadwood, Devils Tower, etc. If I were you, I%26#39;d do this in two different trips. Too much too see and do in the two different areas!

Jackson or Cody to Deadwood S.D. and back to Yellowstone ?

We are flying into Denver, going to Mt. Rushmore, Battle of Little Bighorn, Cody, eastern part of YNP, then to Jackson Hole and back to Denver in 11 days in late May-early June. I think you could probably do both regions but am not an expert since I will actually being doing the Mt. Rushmore trip for the first time. We did the western part of YNP and Grand Tetons/Jackson Hole last year as well as Las Vegas and Grand Canyon in 8 days.

Sorry for the late response. My husband and I did a very similar trip in mid September 2 years ago. We flew into Denver and traveled through Wyoming on a scenic highway to Jackson/Grand Teton. Stayed 1 night, but could have probably stayed 2. Went to Yellowstone, 2 nights, and then to Glacier, but that wasn%26#39;t worth the trip. Go to Cody from Yellowstone. We stayed 2 nights in Cody, but you could probably do it in 1. Don%26#39;t miss the Buffalo Bill Museum, it was great and I%26#39;m not a big museum goer. From Cody we went to the Devil%26#39;s Tower and then Mt. Rushmore. Rushmore is so much better than I anticipated. Truly spectacular. We stayed 2 nights in Deadwood (Holiday Inn right in downtown. Was great as of 2 years ago). Traveled all over the Black Hills area. Went to Wall (unbelievable, different shopping-even my husband had a good time) and Badlands National Park. Badlands was my favorite stop of the whole trip. It is absolutely awesome. We stayed in Rapid City and then drove down through Custer State Park - again, worth it - and on to Hot Springs, where there is a wild horse sanctuary. If you like those kinds of things, it was great. We actually walked among the wild mustangs. From there we headed back to Denver. With good planning, your trip is definitely doable in 16 days and flying into Denver is probably cheaper than Jackson. Hope the info helps.

It might be hellpful to others if you provided your reasons for the following:

Sounds to me like you were on somewhat of a fly-by. Where did you go in GNP? It is a long drive there from YNP.

I was asked why I didn%26#39;t think Glacier National Park was worth the trip from Yellowstone. My husband and I enjoyed Grand Teton and Yellowstone so much that Glacier was a disappointment. The long drive wasn%26#39;t an issue as we had planned it that way (and we had more time than 15-16 days). We intended to spend 2 nights at Glacier, but spent only 1. The accommodations in the park were mediocre and I just didn%26#39;t think the park was as pretty as the other two.

Surprised by the view that it wasn%26#39;t as pretty, but I certainly respect your opinion.

It gets crowded at Logan Pass and the traffic on the GTTS highway (of course we all contribute to that) but feel that it, and the roads to Many Glacier and Two Medicine, are lovely in their wildness.

Agree also about Cody for 1 night, impressed by the museums.

We have not ';hit'; some of the places you mentioned, will soon, perhaps on this September%26#39;s trip to Yellowstone (again), but did enjoy the Southern Utah National Parks.

we go to glacier every summer %26amp; make our way down to ynp, %26amp; then to jackson. i don%26#39;t know which area i like the best but i have never seen a more beautiful area than glacier national park. going to the sun road %26amp; the many glacier area are unreal. we always hike the highline trail %26amp; never get tired of the views.

ptguard10, I%26#39;ve been to GNP a number of times, have hiked several trails, one of the best from Many Glacier into Canada (what an incredibly beautiful route). As with most places, it%26#39;s helpful to get a half mile from the crowds, the trails are the ';blue highways'; of the parks.

My husband and I did this trip (plus a little more) last year driving from Illinois. One night in Deadwood and 2 days is good. One day at Rushmore/Crazy Horse. We didn%26#39;t appreciate Crazy Horse as much as Rushmore. Holiday Inn in Deadwood is good. Go to Adams Museum and eat at Kevin Costner%26#39;s hotel (Lil%26#39;s). Lots of Costner memorablia.We did skip Devil%26#39;s Tower and then drove to Yellowstone for 7 nights and GTNP for 3 nights. We did not work in Cody to our trip. Next time (this year) we are going to stay north of Yellowstone for 10 days in Paradise Valley and then drive through Colorado home. Custer State Park is good but in retrospect, everything was paled by Yellowstone and GTNP. Maybe too many national parks in one trip. Drive the Beartooth Highway, it%26#39;s awesome. Red Lodge was somewhere we would loved to explore, also Cooke City is really unique. You will love this trip. I fell in love going out there. I have always been a beach person but the Big Sky of Montana and wide open spaces of Wyoming have changed me. We went in September of 2007. We needed shorts, tshirts in South Dakota and went to jeans with light jacket by Sept. 10 in Wyoming. Take rain gear and layer your clothes. Hope you have a grat time!

My husband and I will be in Yellowstone/Tetons Sept. 7-13. I haven%26#39;t visited the area since I was 15 (30 years ago, yikes!) and hubby has never been. Looking forward to a great trip. Hope you also have a fabulous time!

Yellowstone and Rushmore

I live in Boise, and my daughter prefers a suggestion to travel to Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore... last weekend of June through the next weekend.

She%26#39;ll be 10, and she won%26#39;t be into long hikes. It%26#39;s only been 27 years since I%26#39;ve been in the park, so I know something of what to expect... which, in this case, is to hit the main points of interest and move on. Still, any suggestions will be accepted. She wouldn%26#39;t mind a wildlife encounter... at safe distance.

(NOTE: She loved the tent cabins at Yosemite a couple years ago, and she%26#39;d probably prefer something similar in Yellowstone. I work for someone who has trailers positioned at Flagg Ranch just south of the park and by Hebgen Lake north of West Yellowstone. Would cabins within the park be booked by now? Would the trailer positions be preferable?)

From there... all those years ago, I DID take the highway over Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge (my father said he contributed drafting work to the project way back when). I%26#39;m weighing that vs going through Cody en route to Devils Tower and the Black Hills, since I%26#39;m more curious about Wyoming routes to Sheridan or Buffalo than Montana routes. Any recommendations in that regard?

Yellowstone and Rushmore

A short hike that you and your daughter might enjoy is the one that takes you north of Old Faithful Geyser up a hill to where you can look down on the geyser as it erupts. I believe you start out on a path by the lodge just to the east of Old Faithful Geyser, then follow it up the hillside. It gives you a great view of the whole Old Faithful area and it isn%26#39;t as crowded, so you can watch Old Faithful erupt in relative peace.

You might want to check on cabins inside the park now, as I have heard that they do book up quickly. Xanterra handles all park reservations, so you can call one number to find out. We%26#39;ve stayed in cabins at Canyon and Lake, and they are pretty much the same. You might have a buffalo encounter at the cabins, as they tend to roam around in both areas. If you can%26#39;t get a place in the park and go for the trailer option, you might find that the one at Hebgen Lake is better-located. Since it is closer to the west side of the park, you would come in at Madison Junction and be more centrally located to take either of the ';loop'; roads.

Yellowstone and Rushmore

For wildlife encounters try Hayden Valley between Canyon and Fishing Bridge and Lamar Valley along the northeast entrance road. Watch for pull-outs full of people with big cameras and scopes for a sure bet or empty pull-outs and your own binoculars for sighting all to yourselves. Of course early mornings and evenings are best for wildlife.

I don%26#39;t think there are any tent cabins in Yellowstone, but there are stand-alone and 4-plex cabins and motel style rooms. If you%26#39;re a little more adventurous there%26#39;s always tent camping. Reservations in the park may be hard to come by but keep in mind that there are cancellations throughout the season and you%26#39;ll have better luck catching one of these by calling rather than trying to book on-line.

In 2006 we took US 14 over the Big Horns from Sheridan to Greybull and it was a pretty drive. Last fall there was a wildfire that went through Shell Canyon so I%26#39;m sure the scenery has changed somewhat.

Try to get lodging in YS, visit www.travelyellowstone.com and also call them for cancellations that usually don%26#39;t show up online.

If you can%26#39;t get inside the park... there are some cabins in West Yellowstone, Gardiner, Silver Gate area (NE entrance) and outside of the East Entrance. Also tent camping is fun.

If you can get a spot at a trailer in Flagg Ranch, that would be good to see Tetons.

In Cody WY is are some great museums. Devils Tower is fun. Either drive through Sheridan or Buffalo. Either way is good. Black Hills, I would look at staying in Custer, Hill City or Keystone. Visit Jewel Cave Nat Mon, we liked this cave tour better than Wind Cave Nat Park.

Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole

My husband and I are thinking about going taking a 1 week trip out west. I have a few questions.

1) How busy is it in the summer? What about the week after July 4th? How is it in late May/early June?

2) We want to spend most of our time outdoors but would like a nice place to stay at night. We live in New Orleans so we want to get away from it all but we enjoy a nice dinner with a glass of wine at the end of the day

3) Places to stay - we like small places - B%26amp;B%26#39;s or small inns. Would you recommend staying in Jackson for Grand Tetons or in the park itself? Also, what about Yellowstone?

Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole

1) Very busy. Busy both time periods you asked about but it will always be busier after school is out. We have been in mid June and mid July. Both are great but in June we saw more bears. Don%26#39;t worry about the crowds. I hate crowds and had no trouble dealing with them.

2) You need to look at West Yellowstone for the most central access to the park. www.travelyellowstone.com is the site for reservations inside the park. You%26#39;ll be very lucky to find anything at this point, though. If you are fortunate enough to get something inside, the food will be OK. Maybe very good but you never know. Lake Hotel is supposed to be the best.

3) Part of this is 2 I suppose. Check out Jackson Lake Lodge in the Tetons. It will meet your nice dinner and wine without trouble and throw in some great views too. We liked it. You can stay in Jackson to see the Tetons but its too far for seeing Yellowstone.

You%26#39;re planning this trip pretty late as far as accomodations to. You%26#39;ll need to get moving.

If you can, I%26#39;d strongly suggest staying in the park if you can.

Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole

summer is the busy season but it%26#39;s not so busy that you find it annoying (it%26#39;s not ';beach in the summer'; busy).

some people want to limit the # of places they stay. i actually enjoy moving around to different lodges, hotels, %26amp; b %26amp; b%26#39;s.

depending on what all you want to do here is what i would enjoy...

day 1: fly into jackson %26amp; spend the first night there acclimating yourself to the town.

day 2: visit grand teton national park, including jenny lake (take the boat ride %26amp; hike up to inspiration point/hidden falls). you can also rent boats to take out on jackson lake, take a smooth water raft trip, horseback ride, or just enjoy visiting the area, sightseeing %26amp; looking for wildlife. options to stay include jenny lake lodge (expensive but great %26amp; includes two meals, horseback riding, bicycles, etc.), jackson lake lodge, or signal mountain lodge.

day 3,4: work your way into the park %26amp; stay at one of the lodges for a couple of days. the most popular are old faithful lodge %26amp; lake yellowstone hotel (my favorite). you can have a nice dinner in either%26#39;s dining room. from either one of these two lodges (or any of the others) you can do the figure 8 loop %26amp; see the park. you can spend 2 days or 2 weeks in yellowstone depending on what you want to do. if hiking is your thing there are just tons of options. many people just enjoy going to each area of the park, doing a little sightseeing without much hiking, %26amp; visiting each lodge/concession area.

day 5: ride out the northeast entrance %26amp; over the beartooth pass to red lodge. it%26#39;s a wonderful drive %26amp; there are some great places to stay/eat in red lodge. there are hiking options along the way if you are interested in that.

day 6: drive over to cody, wy via the chief joseph hwy (charles kuralt says it%26#39;s the most beautiful drive in america). see the buffalo bill museum, the irma hotel, %26amp; go to the rodeo that night. i didn%26#39;t think i%26#39;d be a fan of the rodeo but really enjoyed it.

day 7: drive back to jackson thru the east entrance (177 miles) %26amp; spend another night there.

my favorite places to stay (%26amp; there are many other great places to stay)...

jackson

-the sundance inn: 1 block from the square %26amp; a very quaint 60%26#39;s style motel with great owners. not fancy but very clean %26amp; convenient to downtown.

-inn on the creek: 3 blocks from the square %26amp; a great b%26amp;b type inn. only about 8 rooms but a wonderful place to stay. more upscale.

-the wort: nicest hotel in jackson, right on the square, great bar, convenient to everything.

-the trapper inn: recently renovated %26amp; about 2 blocks from the square. use to be a favorite of mine but haven%26#39;t stayed in it since they renovated.

other options are to stay in a condo at spring creek ranch or teton village. these are 10 minutes from downtown %26amp; wonderful properties but i prefer staying close to the square.

in grand teton i love jenny lake lodge. these are individual cabins %26amp; offer more privacy than jackson lake lodge, which is another good place to stay but more along the lines of a bigger multi-room hotel.

inside yellowstone i love the lake hotel. the lobby, sitting area, %26amp; dining room are great in the evenings.

red lodge: gallegher%26#39;s irish rose bed %26amp; breakfast is my favorite but the pollard is also very nice.

if you don%26#39;t go to red lodge another area just outsdie the park that i would highly recommend is chico hot springs. it%26#39;s 30 miles outside the north entrance of ynp. just a super place to stay for a night. great rooms (request warren%26#39;s wing), a full service spa, %26amp; the hot springs are a must. other excursions can be booked from here as well. their restaurant is very good too.

cody: i don%26#39;t have a favorite place in cody but there are plenty of good hotels.

this entire itinarary doesn%26#39;t require a ton of driving. depending on how much driving you do in ynp your longest drive is from cody back to jackson (3 hours).

Thanks for the great info. I have one more question - what about Glacier National Park. We were thinking about doing this instead because we though it might be less crowded.

Also, do you know anthing about the Bentwood Inn?

If you have not seen Yellowstone... I would got there. Glacier is also beautiful, but Yellowstone is the first National Park, and has so much to see.

Early June will be nice.. most kids/families will still be in school or not quite ready for a family trip.

Here%26#39;s an idea:

Day 1 Arrive Jackson. Stay in Jackson for more choices in lodging and dining options, but 3 nice places inside the park, not luxury, but nice.

Day 2 Visit Tetons.

Day 3 Visit Tetons in morning, maybe an early morning float trip, then drive up to YS.

Day 4 Visit YS. You may want to try to get reservations inside the park at www.travelyellowstone.com, also call them to see if there is availability. IF not, stay in West Yellowstone.

Day 5 YS day

Day 6 YS Day

Day 7 Drive back to Jackson to depart.

See Xanterra.com re: YNP lodging; do try to stay in the park. Call them and inquire occasionally to see if anything opened up.

Get lodging in W. Yellowstone to be your backup. Go for the experience, not luxe lodging and dining. If you are enthused about YNP scenery and wildlife, you won%26#39;t spend much time in your lodging anyway. It%26#39;s often found far more interesting than we originally think.

Spend as much time as possible in YNP. Forget about Glacier, that is another trip, perhaps along with Banff and Jasper National Parks.

keep in mind that we%26#39;ve done ynp about 6 times so doing both ynp %26amp; gnp is not a problem for us because we don%26#39;t have to hit every spot in ynp each trip.

with great planning %26amp; about 8 days you can do both (glacier %26amp; ynp). we have done both the last 4 summers %26amp; love it. it requires flying into one area %26amp; out of another. we like working from glacier down to jackson. fly into kalispell %26amp; out of jackson. alamo for a one way rental car. you only have one long drive. here is how we do it...

day 1: fly into kalispell %26amp; stay on west side of gnp (whitefish or mcdonald lodge in west glacier).

day 2: drive going to the sun road all the way to many glacier %26amp; hike iceberg lake, staying at many glacier hotel (a super np lodge).

day 3: hike highline trail from logan pass all the way back to many glacier.

day 4: drive from gnp to chico hot springs (around 6 hours %26amp; the only long drive you have but it%26#39;s beautiful).

day 5: drive into ynp making the loop to see mammoth hot springs %26amp; the ne corridor (tower junction area)leaving the park out the ne entrance to red lodge via beartooth pass (unbelievably beautiful drive).

day 6: drive back to ynp %26amp; hike the grand canyon of yellowstone, afterwards heading to the lake yellowstonen area staying at the lake hotel. great place to have dinner too.

day 7: leave lake area going back up hayden valley (lot of wildlife on this road)%26amp; make a loop to norris geyser basin, madison, %26amp; on to old faithful. spend the night in grand teton national park area.

day 8: visit jenny lake, inspiration point, jackson lake lodge, %26amp; then leave for jackson. if you can squeeze another day in for jackson that would be great.

again, this may be asking a little much for someone who has never been to the park but it%26#39;s become an annual trip for my wife %26amp; i.

Totally different issues. As noted above, a short walk and you generally won%26#39;t find the crowds in YNP that burdensome. Except at the major geyser basins, and folks keep moving or return to their cars. And, they tend not to go very far, so the numbers diminish. YNP has more diversity and wildlife available for viewing than GNP. And YNP roads are such that you can double back and see yet more views and wildlife. It%26#39;s a ';take your time'; park, as there is much to see.

GNP is truly beautiful, but I maintain, if you can plan such, that it%26#39;s another trip, well worth taking with the Canadian Parks on your itinerary. Lastly, GNP and the GTTSHwy is crowded, so you have not gained in that way. So I concluded, if you have only a week, I%26#39;d focus on YNP and, for a lesser time, on GTNP. You%26#39;ll have a great time no matter what you do.

Focus on YNP and GT if you only have a week. Late May/early June is a great time to come. Some of the rates are lower on inns, the crowds are not as great and we were there last year at this time and going back again this year at the same time. If you are going then I would make my reservations ASAP. I made mine back in January.

Just a couple of things to add.

The Going to the Sun Road in Glacier is under construction and will be for several years. Also Logan Pass on the Road can open as late as June 15 if there%26#39;s lots of spring snow and there%26#39;s a good chance of that this year.

Recommendations for horseback riding?

I had planned to use Jackson Hole Outfitters for my trip to Jackson Hole and YNP June 4th - 10th. Rec%26#39;d call today from Hank with JH Outfitters who states due to some new rule or regulation he cannot begin his tours until mid June (the 16th I think). I wanted to use them because they state on their website they go where others don%26#39;t, rides aren%26#39;t crowded. Want a unique experience where there isn%26#39;t a ton of people on our ride or constantly meeting others on the trail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Recommendations for horseback riding?

Everywhere in the Jackson WY area will be different, interesting and unique, compared to New Orleans! Plus in early June, there won%26#39;t be tons of people in the area.... families have to get out of school etc.

Check with Signal Mtn Lodge, see if they have trips early.
