Best Way to do Yellowstone?

Where to stay? When to go? Other relavant advice. What to pack etc.? Go to Grand Tetons, too? Starting to plan a trip and looking for suggestions to start. Is Denver pretty much the only option for where to fly into?

Best Way to do Yellowstone?

Chuck, you%26#39;ll have a great time. Questions for you: When are you planning for, this year or next? It%26#39;s getting somewhat late to get in-park lodging, but still do-able. I prefer in-park, more fulfilling I feel. You can, however, get lodging outside the park in West Yellowstone, Gardiner, for example. Are you coming alone? With kids? How long will you have? If long enough, a day trip (at least) to Grand Teton well worth while. From Wisconsin, you might want to check via, e.g., Expedia and others, about flights to Denver, Billings, MT, etc. I assume you%26#39;ve learned a bit about YNP from this:

as well as the TA selections in the left hand column.

The park provides a figure 8 road, with short side roads, so it becomes almost self-guided. The park map provided at the entrance is a great help. I suggest bringing a cooler (buy a cheap one at a grocery store or other place upon arrival, and carry beverages and snacks/foods. You%26#39;ll want to spend time in certain areas, and not have to run back to central places for these items. It%26#39;s a big park! If you have binoculars, bring them and feel free to ask if you can see what folks are seeing through their scopes.

We put all our Yellowstone trip reports, pictures and planning information on our website. There should be enough there to get you started in your planning. For what its worth, if this is a 2008 trip, accomodations may be an issue.

we flew into bozeman mt and followed the galatin river south to west yellowstone, about 100 miles. it%26#39;s a gorgeous drive. denver is long ride comparatively.

Many people fly into SLC. From there it is about 5 hours from either West Yellowstone or Jackson Wyoming.

If you go to West yellowstone you are right at the park entrance.

If you go to Jackson then you have the chance to visit the Tetons on the way into Yellowstone. I highly recommend making time for them.

Also if you fly into SLC you could head up to West yellowstone, visit the park and exit the south entrance past the Tetons and back to SLC rather than having to back track the same road.

It is a great park to visit. Make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy it.

I am figuring on flying into Jackson and that way being able to spend one day in the Tetons on the return day. Lodging is handled, we just need to figure out what time of the year to go, this year or next. 4 adults, no kids.

Most people like to go in late May/early June or early/mid September. The weather is not extreme and the crowds are heavier in July and August.
