Hi. We%26#39;ll be coming from South Dakota after seeing all the Mount Rushmore, Devil%26#39;s Tower sights and we really want to enter the park from the flattest, less steep and crazy roads possible, since we are driving a 31 foot RV with a passenger who is an acrophobe. If we have to drive a little longer to avoid a crazy pass or whatever, we%26#39;re open to it. I already know we can%26#39;t touch Beartooth highway with a ten foot pole.
I appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks
Flattest, less steep windy road way in...
the north entrance would be the easiest drive in. avoid the ne entrance which is a beautiful drive but depending on which direction you%26#39;re coming from can have some steep/winding (beartooth pass or chief joseph hwy). the east entrance comng from cody is not bad but you still have some grades to go up %26amp; then down as you approach the lake area. nothing too serious.

Thank you PTGuard. I%26#39;ll check out some maps and see what road that is. I appreciate the help!

Where are you planning on camping? If you are headed to Fishing Bridge RV park inside the park, I would enter via the East Entrance.
Do you have a towed car with you to enjoy the park? If not, you will be driving that 31%26#39; RV on windy roads throughout the park to see the sights.
We did a similar trip in a similar sized RV in 2006. Crossing the Big Horns involved some steep mountain driving on the route we took. We took US 14 through Shell Canyon and Greybull. I don%26#39;t know if other routes across the Big Horns would be easier or not. To me the easiest route to the park in an RV would be to take I-90 from Rapid City through Billings to Livingston. Then south on US 89 to Gardiner MT and the north entrance. Google says that drive is 542 miles and 7 1/2 hours. Not much at all in the way of mountains or crazy driving that way. Detouring to Devils Tower adds about an hour and a half driving plus time to visit there.
Google says the shortest route to Fishing Bridge RV park (the only place with hook-ups in the park) is 495 miles and about 9 hours (including the stop at Devils Tower). But you cross both the Big Horns and the mountains on the east border of the park.
Thank you everybody, for your replies. I%26#39;m not yet sure where we%26#39;ll be camping (I know Fishing Bridge is the only game in town for hookups)and I really can%26#39;t reserve in advance as we%26#39;re playing the trip by ear. I%26#39;d love the hookups but we%26#39;re even willing to dry camp or stay outside of the park - whatever options are presented to us at the time, I guess.
It sounds like the north entrance from Gardiner will be our best bet. I know the east entrance is the shorter route but crossing the bighorns might be more stressful than we%26#39;re looking for. We%26#39;ll be leaving our (FLAT...lol) Detroit area home on June 7th and we%26#39;ll have 10 days to spend exploring the west. I%26#39;m so excited. It will be our very first time.
Thank you all again!
