We have 2 nights at Colter Bay Cabins in Tetons, 1 night at Old Faithful Lodge Frontier Cabin and 2 nights at Canyon Pioneer Cabin. I just need an opinion..are these 3 lodgings better than tent camping? Or are the rooms so hideous you would rather sleep outside?
I really want the indoor plumbing, just curious how people would rate these cabins compared to a tent in the great outdoors!!
I%26#39;ve been mulling over the dining options in YS. We will have been in Jackson for 3 days prior.... I think we will save our ';fancy'; dinner for there.
For a non reservation type dinner, would Snow Lodge Obsidian Room be ok? I liked their menu and we will be at OF Lodge that night. How are the meals at Lake House at Grant Village?
Are there any places near any of these cabins to set up our bbq gas grill and cook a dinner? Can we cook outside the cabin or do we have to be in a picnic area.
Thanks everyone.... I need a vacation! The high school students are driving me nuts, and it is only March!!!
Lodging, dining %26amp; cooking questions in YS
I don%26#39;t know all the cabins, but a few points. In general, I would say that the cabins are better than tents and offer a rustic experience. But they are clearly rustic. There are also different quality levels on the cabins that the reservations company can advise you on.
I%26#39;ve never looked at the national park lodges as great dining experiences. However, last July, we had a sensational dinner at Old Faithful Inn -- really, really good! I%26#39;ve been in the OBsidian Room at Snow Lodge, and it%26#39;s nice, but we didn%26#39;t eat.
One other recommendation I would make is Dornan%26#39;s at the southern entrance to the Grand Tetons. It%26#39;s a mid-level restaurant with good food, sensational sunset view of the Grand Teton (a MUST), and literally the finest wine shop I%26#39;ve seen west of the Mississippi. You won%26#39;t believe it!
Have fun.

The cabins are DEFINITELY better than tent camping! Quit second guessing your choice -- you will be fine. I%26#39;m no help with the gas grill question -- wouldn%26#39;t Xanterra be able to answer that?
Also haven%26#39;t eaten at either Obsidian (it%26#39;s a great looking place) or Lake House.
Sorry for the high school kids- recently retired after 32 years teaching high school. March thru May were the hardest times!! Hope your husband is better. The Old Faithful Inn is great for lunch or supper. Dornan%26#39;s at the edge of GT is good also. Have not eaten at Snow Lodge or Grant Village but looked at menus while there. The menus looked good.
At the Obsidian Dining Room, just don%26#39;t get the Shrimp Etouffee if they still have it. Etouffee as a cream sauce was just weird. My wife liked her dinner there. The cafeteria at the Old Faithful Lodge is OK in a scheduling pinch.
Casa, Spring break must be around the corner for some welcome relief. Deep breaths. Visualize YS and GT! Have you decided where are you dining ';fancy'; in Jackson? I think we%26#39;ll dine at OF INN for historical purposes. After that, we will be in Canyon and Roosevelt. When you are in the Tetons, I heard that Signal Mountain Lodge has good food in their dining room. I am at Colter Bay as of yet, but as of now, I plan to eat at Signal Mountain.
Hey thanks for all the input.. and good thoughts for my husband. MRI indicates some issues... but Dr. is not super worried. Yes.. Spring Break is almost here! We have had really nice warm weather and the students are ready to go play outside! Hard to keep them focused on Algebra and Geometry!
We are planning on the Gunbarrel Steakhouse in Jackson as a fancy meal.. any input??? Also looking at a few more casual places.. Bubba%26#39;s BBQ, Snake River Brewery.... Plus maybe some bar snacks at the Million Dollar Bar.
In YS we have 1 night at OF... probably at the Obsidian Room at Snow Lodge. We really did not like the posted menu at Old Faithful Inn. We will go there to visit.. but I can%26#39;t see spending the money on food we really don%26#39;t want. I haven%26#39;t mentioned that my husband is a chef!.. so meals need to be good!
We have 2 nights at Canyon.. probably we will cook a meal at a picnic ground for one night and maybe try something at the Lake area for one night.
You will love the Gunbarrel Restaurant in Jackson Hole. They have great choices and the prime rib that I ate last year was the best that I have ever had. Living near Atlanta we have our choice of great restaurants so I am a bit picky when it comes to good food.
Thanks again! Great advice!
Any other ideas for meals in Yellowstone and Tetons??
Casa,
I can%26#39;t comment on any of your lodging as we did not stay at the same type of lodging.
In canyon we thought the counter service at the general store was fun and pretty good food.
We had breakfast at the Lake House at Grant Village. I was disappointed because they only offerred a breakfast buffet which was good for the kids, but I just wanted a coffee and muffin.
We enjoyed both the breakfast and dinner at OFI. We ate at the dining room that requires reservations. My son (13 at the time) was able to try buffalo and elk at the buffet and loved both.
In the Tetons, we did eat at Dornan. They had pizza and pasta. You can sit outside or inside. It was a fun place to visit. They have a general store for supplies and a wine shop.
We liked Bubbas in Jackson. The food was good and it was a fun place to eat.
In the Teton%26#39;s we stayed at JLL. The causal counter service restaurant was good. We also ate at the Mural Room, which I thought was over priced. Son like it though as he had more elk.
Don%26#39;t know about cooking. But, we picniced for lunch a bunch of times. Bought a loaf of bread, some cold cuts, PB %26amp; J and condiments and made our own lunch.
