What area(s) would you spend a day exploring?

We will be in Yellowstone on June 6-9. We will enter from Cody and stay in West Yellowstone for 4 nights. My plan is to cover the 2 loops and visit the main attractions over the first 3 days. This will give us an overview of the park.

I would like to reserve day 4 to explore one or two areas in greater detail. Our family has a 13 and 14 year old.

I would love to have suggestions on what area(s) and activities that would be memorable for that last day in Yellowstone.

What area(s) would you spend a day exploring?

How about a family hike up Mt Washburn (not knowing about the potential snow presence at that time of the year). In the same neighborhood is the grand canyon of yellowstone with Uncle Tom%26#39;s trail..if your up to 396 stairs.

I have friends who have made reservations at /near Roosevelt for the horseback ride journey to a covered wagon dinner. I believe the info is on Xanterra%26#39;s website.

Go for a boat ride from Bridge Bay or plan on fishing

My suggestion (depending on your kids interests) would be to have them sign up for the Young Scientist Program. The program is based on a workbook and science kit (you check out) for exploring either the Old Faithful or Canyon area. (It is a great program for parents too.)

It gives you ideas of what you can do in each area, asks you to attend a ranger presentation, and complete their choice of activities. The Old Faithful area has shorter hikes versus the longer ones in the Canyon area. The supervolcano exhibit in the Canyon Visitor Center is interactive and interesting to most teens.

Upon completing the workbook and being checked out by the ranger, they will get something for their efforts!

You could have lunch at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel (its dining room overlooks the lake),then go for a family hike on the Storm Point Trail nearby. This hike is easy and is one of the prettiest in the park. You often see buffalo along the trail, which winds along the edge of the lake and also through a pine forest.

Another suggestion would be a have lunch at the Old Faithful Inn and then take a guided 45 minute tour of the hotel, which is an architectural gem.You could then go on a hike to nearby Mystic Falls, which includes walking through Biscuit Geyser Basin. This hike is also easy but very scenic.

Hope these ideas help!

Thanks for the ideas. I will keep them in mind. There are just over 100 days until our trip-not that I am counting...

Try to figure out the eruption time for Lone Star geyser just south of Old Faithful and do an early morning hike in. The trail is paved and very easy(you can bike it if you wish) and you will likely find few people there to watch with you.
