Can anyone tell me the difference between staying in the Jackson area vs. Driggs,ID?
We found some reasonable homes for rent in Driggs.
What%26#39;s the weather like at the end of May? are any roads still closed?
Are there things to do around Driggs?
Driggs anyone?
Jackson is close to the GT and has the restaurants, etc. that you want to when visiting.
Driggs anyone?
Driggs is about a hour drive away from Jackson, through a mountain pass. End of May snow is likely -- it may be a light or it could be a dump of wet spring snow. End of May I would not consider staying in Driggs. Driggs is a very small town -- actually it is where many Jackson workers live. Jackson is much larger, more to do and see, and an hour closer to the Grand Tetons. There is a reason you are finding reasonable prices in Driggs.
Driggs is a small mountain town. It has grocery stores and smaller restaurants, but it is not the more tourist-centric town that Jackson Hole is...there are more activities at night, bars, restaurants, stores, etc. in Jackson. The pass can also be a bit challenging if you are not used to mountain driving. I ';commuted'; from Driggs to Jackson for quite a while and rain in the valleys mean snow on the pass. It will add about 45 minutes to your drive before getting to the turn-off for Grand Teton National Park. On the other hand, if you don%26#39;t mind mountain driving, it is a beautiful drive. Watch for moose and elk along the creeks. There is an incredible view from the turn-out at the top of the pass before you drop back into Jackson valley.
We stayed down the hill from Grand Targhee last time out in that area.(in Driggs) We loved it and gave us options to go to Yellowstone or other places. Great new upscale grocery store in Driggs - small town, but the drive over the pass takes about 45 min if you want to go to Jackson. We were there in late May and it snowed several days but the pass was clear. It gives you an option to go up to West Yellowstone on one of the scenic Idaho highways - state road that passes Lower and upper Mesa Falls. We went up one day and had lunch in a delightful place on the Snake River and into West Yellowstone. Also went down from Driggs toward Swan Valley - beautiful. Depends on what you want - Driggs is quiet but there is easy access to the Tetons or Yellowstone. We also took a day and went to the Craters of the Moon nat%26#39;l monument in Idaho - fantastic if you like different not touristy things to do. Also VIctor has a great drugstore that has milkshakes and there are some cute breakfast places around.Let me know if you have any questions. have fun
