Good campsites?

I am looking to do some camping this summer and I am looking for any tips on a good campsite in or around yellowstone . Something with trees, maybe a creek or river etc. any info would be great. thanks

Good campsites?

Welcome rvholiday,

First, are you tent camping or RV? And if RV how large (combined length)?

I have camped many time over the years in and around YNP and done both the tent and RV thing.

Also what do you expect as far as services and facilities at the camp grounds?

Some are more full service (power hookups, hot/cold water, showers, many RV%26#39;s, Sewage dumps, larger CG%26#39;s) or more of a comprimise (running cold water, flushing toilets, medium to large CG) or the rustic type (clean pit toilets, fresh water, more quiet, small to medium CG%26#39;s)?

Also how far around YNP are you considering?

I have recomendations for all of thesebased on my experiences. Please provide more details and I will reply back with a nioce selection for you.

Glad to help,

- Kery

Good campsites?

We are traveling in a 28%26#39; trailer, It would be nice to have atleast power, and a dump station. I am not fond of camping side by side with the next trailer it would be nice to have some space in between, we have 2 kids that like to run and play, so a playground might be nice.

Inside Yellowstone Park there is only 1 campground with any hookups, Fishing Bridge RV Park, which is just what you described as not wanting... camping side by side with the next rv! Not a lot of space between sites at all.

All the other campgrounds inside the park have no hookups, though many have a dump station. Look at Canyon or Madison Campgrounds, both very nice.

Visit www.nps.gov/yell for more info.

Outside of the park there are private campgrounds in West Yellowstone that have hookups, a bit more space between sites and amenities like playgrounds etc. KOA and Grizzly RV Park both look great! We were planning a camping trip too, but decided to stay in lodging instead this trip, so I spent a lot of time researching!

In Tetons, there is an RV park at Colter Bay as well as a non hookup campground. Check on www.nps.gov/grte

I%26#39;ve stayed at Fishing Bridge and agree it describes what you are not looking for in the side by side RV camping. If you want to stay in the park you can%26#39;t beat it for location. If you want play grounds etc. look at the Koa as suggested. There are some other camp grounds in West Yellowstone off the beaten path Madison Arm Resort is one of them a bit more in the woods than the KOA plus activities for the kids it is on a lake has paddle boats, etc. Also high speed internet but as I said more rustic than the KOA this is on Hebgan Lake. You do have full hook up, laundry and shower facilities as well as a camp store. We plan to return again this year to YNP with a motor home, we love staying first night at Colter Bay RV, then head out to a primitive such as Slough Creek - drive back to Canyon for use of Showers. If you need hook up in park only option is Fishing Bridge which has everything you need and nice park stores - kind of nice to walk to general store with restaurant ice cream counter for the kids! For me, I can accept the side by side parking for a night or two just to have the convenience of location. Have fun YNP is one of my favorite places in the World.

This is a link to a great page on camping in Yellowstone. Not only does it have the same information as on the Park site, but John has links to maps of the specific campgrounds.

This is really helpful in making your site reservations (which you need to do as soon as you can!). The campgrounds do sell out in Yellowstone during the summer.

The comparison chart shows different services by campground. We prefer the smaller campgrounds in trees in August (days are sunny and warm) like Norris.

If you are coming into the park from Cody, you may want to check out some of the campgrounds just outside the park on the Shoshone National Forest. One that comes to mind is called Wapiti Camp Ground. It has power hookups and sites close to the river. A beautiful camp ground that is excellent for families. We use it quite often...Only $15 per night with power or $10 per night without power
