Safari/photography tours?

Read somewhere that there is a safari type/photography tour in Yellowstone. It may have been with Xanterra. My husband and I have reservations at Old Faithful Inn for a few days the 1st week of June. My question is has anyone done this and if so, is the safari tour done on the same roads we ourselves could drive to and therefore a waste of money? Would greatly appreciate any info. Will probably see YNP only once in my lifetime and want to get it right. We are flying in to Salt Lake City, a few nights in Jackson, a few nights in YNP and a night in Cody. So excited!!!!!!!!!!

We booked a trip with Safari Yellowstone the last time we visited the Park and found it to be very good and fairly reasonable. Here is a link to their web site: http://www.safariyellowstone.com/

Save your money! they drive the same roads to the same places as you can drive for free. as far as wildlife, get up early and drive through the Hayden valley in central yellowstone. its almost a sure thing that you%26#39;ll see bison and elk and if your lucky a bear or wolves. Ive driven through there several times and can%26#39;t remember ever not seeing animals. the trick is to go early in the morning or at dusk. Telephoto lens/ tripod a must for safe viewing . good luck

I was actually talking with someone today from Xanterra. I think the Safari Photography tour is pretty pricey, approximate (not set for 2008 yet) is $81+ pp.

We found a book that tells you all about photographing Yellowstone.

';Photographers Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton'; by Joseph Lange. It has great suggestions including the right timing for certain areas/shots. We got it on Amazon.

Have a wonderful trip! We will be there in July.

We will be there the first week of June. We were there last year the last week of May. Talked to someone last year about doing a tour but decided against it after talking to my sister and her husband. They drive the same roads that you will. There are books that talk about great photo spots and where to look for wildlife, etc. I just purchased a book called the Treasures of Yellowstone which is great!

Consider, in addition to the above, that you make your own time in YNP, and you won%26#39;t regret it. Rather than moving with a crowd, you%26#39;d have ample time at any location to view the scenery and wildlife. Simple advice; bring cooler with beverages/snacks/sandwiches, whatever, so you can spend as much time as you like in this huge park, w/o running to store or restaurants for sustenance. Bring your camera, binoculars and spotting scope if you have them. No, you need binos, the camera lens will help, but not as good as good binos. You can ask folks with scopes if you can see what they are observing; you will like that, guaranteed.

Thank you everyone for your valuable advise. I think my husband and I will save our money (probably need it for the gas anyway) and just get up very early in the mornings and head out of our own. Liked the point about being able to stay or go from place to place at our own pace. Will definetly purchase a cooler for quick breakfast items and lunch. You all have been great. If you ever plan to come to New Orleans, maybe I can help with your plans. Thanks Again.
