We am planning a family holiday for this August. Is it too late for - say - a week in Yellowstone? Or would it just be too crowded? Someone has suggested that the last week or two of August can be quieter than earlier on, and I wonder if that%26#39;s true?
I would be most grateful for any help on this.
Yellowstone in August
You%26#39;re pretty late but that doesn%26#39;t mean you shouldn%26#39;t try. www.travelyellowstone.com is where you make reservations for inside the park. You may need to call them some to check on cancellations.
We were there in July. It was crowded but we didn%26#39;t have a problem and I don%26#39;t normally deal well with crowds. You may need to let accomodation availability influence your schedule if you want to stay in the park.
Yellowstone in August
Thanks AKJ that is most helpful, I will see what%26#39;s available.
There will be a lot of people in Yellowstone but the park is huge. If one area is too crowded, move on and come back later. If you like to hike, once you get out of the parking lots it is usually pretty quiet. Someone should mention the rule of one thousand. Once you get one thousand feet from the highway or parking lot, you will (generally) see one thousandth of the people.
August is one of the busier months, but you should be fine as long as you plan your lodging ahead of time (lodging in and around the park, and campgrounds do sell out!)
Don%26#39;t miss the bison rut in Hayden Valley. Here is some information on it -

I sure would give it a shot. The park is so huge, and I don%26#39;t think you will mind crowds, especially if you head out on the trails/boardwalks. If you find park lodging full, you could always try West Yellowstone, MT or Gardiner, MT. THese towns offer more of the chain hotels here in the states, but there are some ';mom and pop';motels also. To me, Yellowstone is great just about any time. Have a wonderful holiday!
';too crowded'; is a relative term. i%26#39;ve been to ynp the last 5 summers in mid july %26amp; don%26#39;t find it that crowded. it%26#39;s not like it%26#39;s bumper to bumper inside the park. the biggest thing will be booking lodging inside the park. outside the park should be fine.
I wouldn%26#39;t make the assumption that you can get lodging outside the park in August. There were days in August (for the past two years) when all lodging was prebooked in communities bordering the park. And, all campgrounds. Up to 45-75 miles away.
I just literally got lodging inside the park for four consecutive nights by calling. Call the number, it is worth it!
