Yellowstone to Cody

Hi, we want to take a side trip to Cody during our Yellowstone vacation in August. We plan to exit the NE entrance of Yellowstone and return via the East Entrance. How long will it take to get to Cody via the NE entrance? Any other advice about the trip? Is this considered the Beartooth Highway?

Yellowstone to Cody

We did this route, fantastic. I cannot recall the time, the mileage was not that much. But allow lots of viewing time, as others more knowledgeable will suggest, for the scenery is wonderful. You%26#39;ll see raptors, scenic vistas, interesting geology, et al. We enjoyed both roads, as will you.

If in Cody, highly recommend the Museums. We were there for 3+ hours and left only because we had to meet some friends in Cody. Google these museums; a surprise not just because they are in Cody, but because they are so well executed and curated. I hand it to Cody and others in WY who created them.

Yellowstone to Cody

This is not the Beartooth, although from what I%26#39;ve read here, it%26#39;s beautiful. The Beartooth is in Montana north of the Cooke City entrance to Yellowstone, between Cooke City/Silver Gate and Red Lodge, MT. Takes about 3 hours to drive it with stops. I don%26#39;t know if it fits in your plans, but we are planning on leaving YS east entrance headed to Cody, staying the night in Cody, heading up to Red Lodge for a day of relaxation and horseback, then heading down the Beartooth towards the north entrance to YS the following morning. They say the east to west (down the mountain) is the best way to view it in all its splendor. Hope that helps.

Hi

I would not want to do this all in one day, plus you%26#39;ll need your time in Cody as Voyaging has said.

Best way to see Beartooth hw already described by Beach Girl.

How long for this sidetrip? Where are you coming from in Yellowstone?

Do you want to stay overnight in Cody?

Tet

made this drive last year. mileage wise, it%26#39;s not that far from the ne entrance to cody. maybe around 70 miles %26amp; the drive is beautiful. from cody back to the east entrance is close to the same. depending on how many stops you make i%26#39;d allow 3 hours driving for that loop.

you should really plan on staying in cody for the rodeo. a great experience. the buffalo bill museum is something %26amp; you can pick up some bargains at the sierra trading post outlet too. have lunch at the irma hotel while you are at it.

Just as a possibility, leave the NE entrance at Cooke City and drive the Beartooth Highway until it begins dropping off the palteau. There is a rest stop just a little way down that gives you a great view of the switchbacks and the valley. If you wish, go all the way to the bottom. Turn around and backtrack to the Chief Joseph Highway and take that to Cody. It takes more time but the drive is beautiful.

Thanks for all of your help. I love this website!

We are planning on leaving Yellowstone early morning attending the rodeo and staying the night in Cody. Depending on time, I%26#39;m not sure if we will do the Buffalo Bill museum the day we leave Yellowstone or the next morning. Somewhere I may have read admission is good for two consecutive days?? If that is true we may be able to see part one day and the rest the next. We will probably leave Cody after lunch. Still so much to see in Yellowstone!

I like the last suggestion about driving part of the Beartooth and turning back to head to Cody. Thanks again!

The Beartooth is absolutely beautiful, and not to be missed, as far as I am concerned. We took about 4 hours to do the trip, stopping often. We went in July, and got to see quite a bit of snow. Some people were playing in it, which we don%26#39;t need to do, since we are from MI..! Red Lodge is a cool town. Stop for lunch. We also enjoyed Cody. The drive between Cody and the East entrance to Yellowstone is considered one of the most beautiful drives in the country, I believe Teddy Roosevelt made that sentiment, but don%26#39;t quote me on that! Stop at the dam; stop at Pahaska Tepee and get something from the great gift shop, and maybe walk around. Enjoy the drive-don%26#39;t race to get to Yellowstone. I actually (people will hate me for saying this...lol) enjoyed these two drives, and some others around the national park, more than I did the national park. OUCH-I know I am going to get creamed on that comment! LOL. Are you going to Grand Teton NP, too? If not, you should. And definitely do the museum in Cody. We didn%26#39;t get to see the rodeo, timing not right. Have fun!!!!

tymetraveler, I%26#39;m not critical of your perspective, and agree with you, but one must recall that the geology of the Beartooth and the park are significantly different. YNP is, basically, a crater, so, one cannot really compare the two except aesthetically. YNP has so much geologic and wildlife diversity, and is unique, that we are talking about two different zones.

Voyaging: I totally agree with your statements, also!!

Thank you for the gracious response.
