I am travelling to Yellowstone in early August for my very first time %26amp; any advice will be helpful. My main question right now, though, is that my parents are planning on renting an RV (yes, we know they need to do this RIGHT NOW, thus the questions) and we want our girls to experience tenting. If we stay at Madison Campground (I thought it would be good because of the ranger talks, our girls are 6%26amp;7) can we have an RV %26amp; a tent right next to each other? We adults are going to take turns sleeping with the girls. I wasn%26#39;t sure this was possible. Is there a campground where we can make a reservation that an RV %26amp; a tent can be right next to each other? Do we need two sites?
Any info on this would be great, and any info on taking a 6 %26amp; a 7 year old and an 18 month old baby (backpack carriers for hiking?) would be great.
RV %26amp; tent at Madison?
Good question.
I would contact Xanterra and ask. You may be able to pitch a tent at the RV campsite. Or you may need to rent 2 sites.

RV %26amp; tent at Madison?
This map might help. For two tents, Look at loops G and H which are actually nicer spots because they are for tents and away from the roads. The top of those loops (away from the road) face the meadow and river.
You can ask Xanterra about other tent/RV adjacent spots. Keep the map handy when talking to them when making a reservation.

Welcome to TA ehead,
You can RV and tent either in the same site or adjoining sites if available. Both of these depend on a couple of factors such as how large an RV (if there is another vehicle) is being used and how many campers are in your group. I have done this many times when I am travelling with guests to YNP who require RV resources and I will use one site or two if my group is more than two families (there is a group size limit per site).
I think your idea is a wonderful way to expose your children to the world of tent camping and Madison is a great campground for kids as there is room to roam and it is open for great visability without feeling like you are in a commercial RV park. IF you have room consider bringing bicycles and make sure to walk down by the river one evening as the sunsets are spectacular.
Let me know if you have any more questions and we will be glad to help,
- Kery
Thanks everyone! It sounds like we can do it. My parents haven%26#39;t bought their airplane tickets yet (will do that this week) so as soon as we have that we%26#39;ll rent the RV and I%26#39;ll call the campground. I know I need to get right on this before all the RV%26#39;s are booked. As of last week there were still plenty but...
I%26#39;ve been pondering the bike issue. We only have 2 bikes, one kid one %26amp; one adult mountain bike. We%26#39;re driving %26amp; my parents are flying, so I%26#39;ve been thinking about getting a bike rack for our van %26amp; buying some bikes at yard sales this summer.
There will be 7 of us including the baby so it sounds like we%26#39;ll need two sites.
I%26#39;ll post back once we%26#39;ve figured this out to ask all you smart people my other questions!
