Would like advice re what to do in area besides the National Park sites. Will have a rental car. Looking for outdoor activities in June. Willing to split time staying at Yellowstone and then driving up to four hours elsewhere.
Suggestions for 7 - 10 day visitI would spend a couple of days to the east of Yellowstone going to the Battle of Little Bighorn and to Cody. Cody has great museums and a rodeo.
There is also the Red Lodge area to the northeast.
You will need at least 3-4 days just in Yellowstone and possibly 2 days in the Grand Tetons. Go horseback riding in YNP or Cody and do a raft trip down the Snake River in the GT. If you have not made reservations then I would split my time between either West Yellowstone or Gardiner, Cody and Jackson Hole. If you have reservations in the park then do a central location so you can enjoy the scenery and wildlife.
Suggestions for 7 - 10 day visitif you have 10 days you could really put together a great trip hitting glacier, yellowstone, cody, grand tetons, %26amp; jackson hole. we do this trip each year in 8 days. this summer will be our 4th time so we%26#39;ve got it down pretty slick. the total drive is about 1100 miles for the entire trip but you only have one day of 6 hours in the car %26amp; it%26#39;s an easy drive with gorgeous views (from gnp to yellowstone). our principle thing to do is hike but we have done raft trips, horseback riding, the rodeo, etc.
ptguard10, since you have done this so many times, where do you fly in to and where do you stay? We%26#39;re thinking about late Aug. or early Sept. to avoid the crowds with about a week to 10 days. Of Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Glacier, what do you recommend? We%26#39;ve done RMNP and Estes before.
Aggiemom0409-
WE have toured RMNP and Estes Park and it was awesome but have also been several times to YNP and GT. We will be going again this year to Mt. Rushmore, Cody, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. I think you see more wildlife and awesome scenery in YNP and GT. A lot of people fly into Jackson Hole or Salt Lake City. We did Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Jackson Hole last year and flew out of SLC. This year because of great deals on airline tickets and car rental we are flying in and out of Denver.
I am Wyo. twice a year, and typically fly to Cody (I know it is expensive, but my folks live there). You must go through either SLC or Denver. Usually two flights into Cody and two out per day. I rarely get a round trip from Milwaukee or O%26#39;Hare for less than $425.
Cody is 50 miles from the east gate of Yellowstone, and about the same distance to the start of the Beartooth Highway (best drive in the continental U.S. IMO)
It is optimum as you are very close to YNP/Beartooth Hwy in Cody. Flying to Billings, MT is a decent option, usually cheaper via NW airlines, but a 90 minute or more drive to Cody. Jackson is like flying to Cody, not cheap, but again close to Tetons and YNP, not so close to Beartooth HWY. Some do fly to Bozeman, I never have, so can%26#39;t speak to experience.
aggiemom0409,
each year we have flown into great falls, mt because airfares have been less expensive %26amp; driven up to glacier. it%26#39;s a nice drive %26amp; you can take either the interstate or a more scenic route. depending on where you are going on the east side it%26#39;s 140-180 miles. this year we are flying into kalispell, mt which is more convenient to the park (25 miles from west entrance). we work our way all the way back to jackson hole, flying out of that airport. i think our total airfare ran $600 rt.
you would think we would get tired of the same trip but there is so many different hikes, places to stay, %26amp; things to do, it seems like a new trip each time. i%26#39;ll send you a private message with more details. if i can help, just let me know.
